This Section is dedicated to Channel 6 WATE-TV Personality DON DARE who asked why we didn’t have a sectione devoted to Virus Removal.
You got a used machine and there is no way to burn your CD’s without buying new software. If you want to burn a CD without reading a manual this program is one you need. VLC Media Player is a long-time open-source favorite, and the latest version is also the first to be out of beta development. It's not the only option for free video playback, but it's one of the best, and the feature updates in version 1 make it well worth the upgrade. Users can now get frame-by-frame advancement, granular speed controls allowing for on-the-fly slower or faster playback, and live recording of streaming video. The toolbars are fully customizable, so you can have only the buttons you need in the interface, there's AirTunes streaming, and there's better integration in Gtk environments. Along with the improvements, VLC continues to offer robust support for a wide range of video and audio formats, including OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, HD codecs like AES3, Raw Dirac, and even support for playing back zipped files.
The default interface is still a stripped down player that belies VLC's functionality and features. Skinning can fix that quickly, but behavior can still be a bit unpredictable depending on the quality of the skin. VLC's open-source foundation and community ensures that it evolves quickly and often, with new features and fixes released frequently. Overall, VLC Media Player is a must-have application for its ability to open just about any type of video file you throw at it.
As much as we may like to pretend otherwise, there are lots of people--or more accurately, companies--tracking our every move on the Internet. Most of the time the information that's being collected is for marketing purposes, not malicious ones, but even that can be a bit creepy. Ghostery is an unobtrusive add-on for Firefox that shows users exactly which trackers are present on a given Web page, making it much easier to control who's gathering information about you. Internet Explorer is not as security conscious of security as Firefox but the IE Version is limited but helps. The program's interface is quite user-friendly, with the add-on appearing as a small Pac-Man-style ghost in Firefox's status tray. When Ghostery detects information-gathering scripts on a Web page, a link appears that shows the number of trackers found. Clicking on this link provides the name of each tracker and links to Web pages with more information about the companies in question, including descriptions and popularity rankings. Ghostery can also optionally show an alert bubble in the upper right corner of a Web page that lists the trackers that have been found. The program's interface makes it easy to block each individual tracker if desired, ensuring that information about your Internet usage isn't going to anyone you don't trust. Overall, we found Ghostery to be both unobtrusive and quite informative, and we recommend it to those who are concerned about keeping their Web surfing private. Ghostery is free. Ghostery installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.
Many programs such as AVG, Mcafee, Norton Etc are very complex and are not removed correctly by the manufacturer’s removal programs. Since the normal removal tools are limited it is necessary to get a special removal package that does a thorough job. This site looks to have good programs.

Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations. Ditto for stinger.
Malicious Code has become increasingly complex and infections involve more system elements than ever before. Symantec Security Response has developed tools to automatically conduct what would often amount to extensive and tedious manual removal tasks. If your system has become infected, the tools listed below should aid you in repairing the damage. Ditto Symantec.
The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks computers running Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 for infections by specific, prevalent malicious software—including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom—and helps remove any infection found. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed.
There are some viruses that your anti virus program can find, but cannot remove. This is where the specialized antivirus Utilities comes in. To use these you have to know what you’re doing, have delusions of competency or be really desperate.

SECTION B Basic Security For Wireless Routers
In only 7 years 51% of us have moved from dial up telephone internet 56 kilobaud to broadband Comcast type cable which is now 74000 Kilobaud speed. The mandate from congress is that in the year 2006 we will have speeds of 100,000 Kilobaud.
The computer access by then will be by cable, Phone line, Power Line and Wireless.
Many people now have a cable connection (Comcast or Bellsouth DSL) and are adding a Personal Wireless Router to their system. This allows them to put computers in any part of the house without cables i.e. wireless. There is one problem ! Most pilgrims are not reading the instructions, but are still getting the wireless router to work anyway. They are not aware in many cases that they are sharing their wireless connection for 200 -700 ft in every direction with other people. This means that your neighbor can access your computer.
WATE-TV CHANNEL 6 Asked us for steps to make wireless computing safe. Below there is a a set of instructions from Computer King for making your wireless connection secure.

Internet Explorer Too Dangerous To
As time went on and open-source Mozilla matured, I started using Mozilla as my main Linux Web browser and as my secondary Windows browser. This past Friday, though, I started installing Firefox, the browser-only side of Mozilla, on every one of my production Windows machines. Why? Because Internet Explorer, like Outlook, has finally become, to my mind, a permanent security hole that masquerades as a useful application. Strong words? Have you really thought about this latest exploit? It could hit every Internet Explorer (IE) browser that merely visited any page served by an infected Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Server). No anti-virus program would stop it, no firewall would slow it down and no shipping IE security patch would even notice it.
Microsoft Releases Flurry Of Patches
Microsoft Corp. yesterday released an unusually large number of software security updates to fix flaws in its products, some of which could be exploited to remotely take over computers running the Windows operating system. The free updates, available at Microsoft's Windows Update Web site, are designed to fix at least 21 vulnerabilities, several of which reside on nearly every version of the Windows operating system and affect hundreds of millions of computers. PC MAGAZINE DOWNLOADS
There are a ton of very useful programs that could make your life easier and more efficient. The problem is to find a site you can trust. PC MAGAZINE is such a site. Many of my more useful programs came from this site back when they were only available on CD. You young whippersnappers have it made. Two clicks of a mouse at the right site and you get great software. Try looking at this site from time to time. Since it's a magazine they have to be current, topical and innovative to hold their audience.
I almost hate to point you to this site. It has a long list of programs, with reviews by whoever etc. It does a good job of giving a description of the program but in many cases the programs are ineffective. For example, while they have SPYBOT and AD-AWARE for removing spyware, there many others that are only a millimeter above spyware themselves. On the plus side, this site is fast with a large variety of selections .

One of the first commercial implementations of virtual machines goes back to the IBM 370 mainframe computers. A virtual machine operating system was written so programs developed for the older IBM 360 products could still be run on the new, improved IBM 370 machines. This early use of virtual machines demonstrates some key user benefits which are still important and available to users, today! The user's investment in their software was protected because the virtual machine extended the useful life of the application. Users derived the benefit of the new and powerful hardware while avoiding the expenses associated with migrating software. Serenity Virtual Station enables you to run "virtual personal computers" on your PC. By creating these virtual machines, users can run multiple copies operating systems at the same time. For example, a user could run Microsoft Windows XP (r), a copy of Microsoft NT4, and even a copy of IBM's OS/2 on a PC which is "running Linux".
This an alternative answer to Microsoft Windows Operating systems . CodeWeavers has written software that will allow you to run selected Microsoft programs such as office on your Linux machine. The benefit to Linux users is that the original Office runs on a linux machine that is almost invunerable to virus/Spyware problems.
Google Toolbar for Netscape 7.0 and above
Mozilla Development MOZDEV.ORG has version 0.7.06 which can be downloaded. Press Install by that version 0.7.06 .By going back to http://googlebar.mozdev.org Here if your a doctor you can get a search engine for PUBMED etc. The Googlebar project was initially created to address the widespread desire in the mozilla community for the Google toolbar to support Netscape 7/Mozilla, since many users of mozilla enjoy having all of Google's specialty searches in one convenient location. In the past, the Google toolbar was only available for IE on windows. While we are in no way affiliated with Google inc, our current release emulates all of the basic search functionality of the toolbar, allowing users to easily access almost all of Google's specialty searches (some of which are not yet supported by the original Google toolbar!) from one convenient toolbar.

Many LINUX users are using VMSWARE to host windows98 and windowsXP .
